Hello everyone, this week, I want to tell you about a great hike. This hike is in the Olympic national Park area. The name of the hike is Royal basin, this hike is 14 1/2 miles round-trip to Royal Lake or 16 miles round-trip to the upper Royal basin.
Elevation is from 2550 to 5100 feet.
The map you want to use is Green trails number 136. Tyler Peak.
This is a great overnight backpack trip, or you can make it a long day hike if you hurry. This is a really beautiful alpine lake basin in Olympics. There are great views and the flowers are out in bloom. You'll find the lake is ice free and snow free, but it is very cold!
It's not a very difficult hike, it climbs gradually 6 miles and doesn't get steep until the last mile to the lake. There are a lot of creek crossings, but it isn't too bad. You start off on the Dungeness River Trail, and after mile go to the right to Royal basin.
If you're a good hiker or you're backpacking. You can go an extra mile and another 500 feet to reach the upper basin.
This is a great hike for a weekend, and it's highly recommended for backpackers. The trail is in great shape right now.
Northwest Forest Pass required to park in the large parking lot.
Permit required for backpacking.
Directions:
Take Hwy 101 north toward Sequim Bay State Park. Turn left right before reaching the park on Luella Road. Go 1.1 miles and turn left on Palo Alto Road. Follow this road, which turns into FR 28, for 6miles. Turn right on FR 2880 along the River. At a junction in 1.7 miles, turn left onto FR 2870 and continue another 6.5 miles. To the parking area.
